The Biochemistry of Photosynthesis

چکیده

The unique and important feature of plants is their ability to grow usmg sunlight as the source of energy and C02 from the air as the carbon source with water and elements coming from the environment or soil. The process of photosynthesis with light capture, coupled with 02 evolution and C02 fixation, occurs in the chloroplast. This organelle operates in a semi-autonomous fashion with many of its metabolic processes apparently independent of direct cytoplasmic control. In the light the chloroplast generates its own A TP and reducing power with which CO" is assimilated. The carbon is either exported as triose phosphates to the cytoplasm or stored in the chloroplast as starch. In the dark, reducing power can be generated by a hexose monophosphate shunt in the chloroplast.

Cleome, a genus closely related to Arabidopsis, contains species spanning a developmental progression from C(3) to C(4) photosynthesis.

C(4) photosynthesis involves alterations to leaf development, cell biology and biochemistry. Different lineages of C(4) plants use varying mechanisms to generate the C(4) pathway. Although the biochemistry of C(4) photosynthesis was described around 20 years ago, the phylogenetic distance between Arabidopsis and the traditional C(4) models has not facilitated the transfer of knowledge from Arab...

Excretion of glycolic acid by algae during photosynthesis.

Although pure cultures of algae, in nutrient solution, have been used extensively in research on photosynthesis, the excretion of products into the medium has not been reported, despite their possible importance in the physiology and biochemistry of such cultures. The present investigation with the Cl4 tracer has revealed a significant, and apparently functional, secretion of glycolic acid by C...

Carbohydrate metabolism of the avocado. I. Relations between sugars in leaves during photosynthesis and subsequent dark periods.

The sugars of avocado leaves and leaf disks were labeled by photosynthesis in CO2 during various periods. The label found in the sugars was examined immediately following photosynthesis as well as after a period of respiration under various conditions. Sucrose was found to be the sugar most rapidly labeled during photosynthesis. Mannoheptulose was formed concurrently with sucrose but at a lower...

Modeling the Evolution of C4 Photosynthesis

The prediction and verification of adaptive trajectories on macroevolutionary timescales have rarely been achieved for complex biological systems. Employing a model linking biological information at multiple scales, Heckmann et al. simulate likely sequences of evolutionary changes from C3 to C4 photosynthesis biochemistry.

Light energy allocation at PSII under field light conditions: how much energy is lost in NPQ-associated dissipation?

In the field, plants are exposed to fluctuating light, where photosynthesis occurs under conditions far from a steady state. Excess energy dissipation associated with energy quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (qE) functions as an efficient photo-protection mechanism in photosystem II. PsbS is an important regulator of qE, especially for the induction phase of qE. Beside the regulatory energy...
